Opening Salmon Sacramento River

This morning was both the opening day of the upper stretch of the river from Keswick to 44 bridge for trout, and from Deschutes Bridge to the Red Bluff Diversion Dam for salmon. My clients today have fished on this day ever since 2010. Every year we fish early in the day for salmon and later migrate to the trout up river. We left the river in the morning after landing 4 kings and hit the Sundial Bridge area for trout. We ended up landing over 39 in just a few hours of fishing! It’s been a pretty good opening day surprising many anglers with everyone catching salmon.

Giant Rainbow Trout

The last couple of days I have taken some of my annual, every-season trout fishermen out on the water. I can't begin to tell you how great it was! We caught big fish all day drifting egg patterns with light tackle. This kind of trout fishing is the best you're going to get. Remember, I have been fishing full time since 1988!

Kokanee Salmon

The Kokanee salmon fishing at Whiskytown Lake has really improved with the fish getting bigger and bigger. Today we landed over 20 fish and had a great shore lunch. The fish were all around 40 feet in size and we caught them using pink and orange Hoochies. This is the best I've seen all Summer and Spring!

Big Rainbows and Giant Browns

Since Opening Day August 1, salmon and trout fishing has been amazing. I have been fishing trout on the upper section of the river out of Redding. We are catching 15 to 30 fish daily with some of the fish in the 22 inch range and surprisingly, even a 28 brown trout! This was my 6th brown trout on the Sacramento River. I will continue to fish for both king salmon and Big rainbows all season long. Remember, the steelhead will start showing up soon!

Big King Salmon on the Sacramento River

My little break from king salmon has been a great but wild ride. We have been catching so many 20-23 inch rainbow trout over these last few days. Today, we landed 4 kings and 1 steelhead with the largest fish being around 20 pounds using Roe. I will be salmon fishing daily from Anderson to Corning, drifting Roe and pulling plugs.

Trout on the Sacramento River in Redding

The fishing today was wide open even though the water is dropping daily. It seems that the salmon are more affected by water changes than the rainbows, so when we get big drops, I give opportunities to get some action in the boat! Clients read these reports and wonder why we jump around so much- this is why! I like action, it’s very hard for me to sit on fish that aren’t biting.

Salmon Fishing in Red Bluff and Corning, CA

We started off the morning back trolling Flatfish lures and caught two kings within a couple of hours both of which were big fish with shoulders. We continued to fish plugs with one more on and gone. Once we started casting spinning rods and around 11 am we hooked and landed a fish over 30 pounds! I will be fishing in Corning and Redbluff for the next month until the fish move further north.

Big Kings are Biting!

We hooked a couple of big kings today even though we had 40 mph+ winds! I was surprised that the fish bit at all with that gusty north wind. The biggest fish we caught today was around 24 pounds.

King Salmon Fishing

It was a pretty weird day today. I saved a 79 year old man from drowning and also had something else happen that I wouldn't wish on anyone. That being said we still managed to get a few nice big fish on the boat. The water level is dropping down to 8300 CFS and will drop more as the weeks go on. Changes in the water always make the bite a bit tougher. The great thing is they are some really big, healthy fish.

Big Weekend King Salmon

Sunday salmon fishing was 3 for 3, and way better than the day before! We started off the first hour using a Gloomis rod on the water, never to be found. It was a quiet boat at first but we all snapped out of it when we caught our first fish around 7:30 am, landing a 22 pound male. The rest of the day we hooked and landed two other great fish bringing our total to 3 kings for the day. Remember, there are fewer fish this year but they are much larger so far!

August 23, 2021

Big King Salmon

The last few days we have been catching some real giants. These fish are not small, they have thick fillets and are super clean. We are working hard at getting larger numbers but with the water dropping these fish are lock-jawed so don't lose any!

Salmon Fishing is Improving!

We are starting to see some life in the river. These king salmon are biting a little more every day. Roe bait seems to get us the best bites.

August 25, 2021

King Salmon Fishing in Corning, California

Another day on the water! We drifted Roe and landed 4 king salmon with the largest fish coming in around 28 pounds. The water level is dropping daily so it's still not crazy good fishing but we are all working hard and are catching some big giants!

August 26, 2021

Giant King Salmon are Here

The water is down to 7100 CFS and is droppng daily but the fish are here! I can't say any more except that we are starting off September with a great month.

August 29, 2021

Big Salmon Push

It seemed like we got some bigger numbers of fish showing up this weekend down in Corning, CA. The fish here are cleaner and a bit fresher. We should have some cooler weather by the end of the week.
