SACRAMENTO RIVER

The Sacramento River is known for producing award winning fish! Stretching 400 miles, the Sacramento River is California’s longest river, drawing in fishing enthusiasts from all across the world. With its connection to the ocean and vast network of estuaries, this river is the perfect spawning ground for anadromous fish including king salmon, rainbow trout, steelhead and striped bass.

Fishing the Sacramento River with Kirk

Most of our Sacramento River fishing trips launch from the stretch running through Redding, where the river holds king salmon, steelhead, rainbow trout, and striped bass depending on the season. We fish from a 25' jet boat, which lets us cover water efficiently and get into the deeper holes and runs where fish are holding, especially useful during salmon season when fish are staging in specific pools before moving upriver.

Sacramento River salmon fishing is most active from mid-July through the end of the year, when king salmon move through on their way to spawn. We typically work bait and lures suited to the time of year and water conditions — what works in late July is different from what works in November, and a lot of the value in fishing with a guide comes down to knowing which presentation matches which week.

Sacramento River trout fishing runs year-round, and it's a good option for clients who want a more relaxed day on the water or are introducing kids to fishing. Rainbow trout are abundant and the action tends to be more consistent than during peak salmon runs.

Striped bass fishing picks up in the spring, typically April through early June, when stripers move into the river. Steelhead fishing is available year-round as well, though like all wild fish, timing and numbers shift with water flows and conditions each season.
